Job Summary
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and receiving work lead direction from the Academic Preparation Programs Manager, the Academic Preparation Initiatives Specialist is responsible for developing and carrying out student-facing program components of the CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP) and other college transition programs housed in Academic Preparation Programs/Undergraduate Education. Responsibilities include communicating CSU academic readiness standards to high school students and staff in the SJSU service area through presentations, tabling, newsletters, and other outreach methods; distributing academic readiness materials to local high schools; creating and maintaining content for the SJSU EAP website; and developing innovative approaches to engaging high school students and staff in college readiness conversations. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for assisting in the identification and analysis of course-taking patterns and academic preparation trends in our service area high schools, as well as first-year educational outcomes of service area students who attend SJSU. The incumbent will also take a lead role in organizing events sponsored by Academic Preparation Programs (for example, statewide EAP meetings hosted by SJSU) and developing college readiness and transition programs as funding becomes available through the CSUCO or other sources. This position requires regular collaboration with both internal and external offices and programs that oversee aspects of the high school to college transition—for example, Student Outreach & Recruitment, New Student & Family Programs, Student Success Centers, the Testing Office, Cal-SOAP, etc.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and plan robust and data-driven student outreach plan
Create or order outreach materials to be used in the events
Create and maintain effective working relationships with partners from local high schools and districts (district superintendents and assistant superintendents, curriculum coordinators, testing coordinators, school principals and assistant principals, counselors, mathematics and English department chairs, and teachers).
In collaboration with the APP Manager, plan and oversee academic preparation and college transition programs as CSU or SJSU mandates arise or as funding becomes available from the CSUCO or other sources
Maintain records of outreach and communication and other academic preparation initiatives for reporting purposes
Assist in the identification and analysis of course-taking patterns and academic preparation trends in service area high schools, as well as first-year educational outcomes of service area students who attend SJSU

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Excellent oral and written communication skills, including knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation, and spelling
Ability to obtain a valid California Driver’s License
Knowledge of academic standards in secondary education, including the UC/CSU a-g eligibility requirements and the Common Core State Standards
Knowledge of software applications such as word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet programs and database management
Excellent interpersonal, outreach, customer service and public relations skills
Ability to advise students individually or in groups on routine matters, and general knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior

Required Qualifications

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related
Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling

License
A valid driver’s license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver’s license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.
Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years of professional experience as a high school or college counselor or advisor
