DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Media Access Group creates captions, subtitles and descriptions for a variety of media clients, including PBS and commercial television networks, movies, DVDs, digital media and environmental installations. The Media Access Group (MAG) is a pioneer in making media accessible for people with sensory disabilities. The Caption Center (TCC) was the first captioning agency in the world. We helped pioneer the development of line-21 closed captioning for viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing and we remain on the forefront of caption technology. Our audio description unit, Descriptive Video Service (DVS), provides important information about the visual elements of a program through the use of an additional narrative audio track.

JOB OVERVIEW

Caption Writers transcribe the audio portion of a program and create a timed text track intended for use by deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. Individuals work independently to carefully transcribe, time and place captions for the deaf and hard-of-hearing audience for a variety of media and clients including, but not limited to, network broadcast, home video/DVD and first-run feature films. Caption writers retain responsibility for maintaining MAG style preferences and consistencies. Caption writers are responsible for meeting MAG deadlines in our continued efforts to provide excellent customer service. The Caption Writer transcribes audio tracks and determines timing and placement of captions. The Caption Writer prepares master and caption scripts and enters this information into the captioning system. In addition, the Caption Writer operates video, audio and word processing equipment and other captioning systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Transcribe the audio portion of a program and create a timed text track intended for use by deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers.
Work independently to carefully transcribe, time and place captions for the deaf and hard-of-hearing audience for a variety of media and clients including, but not limited to, network broadcast, home video/DVD and first-run feature films.
Retain responsibility for maintaining MAG style preferences and consistencies.
Meet MAG deadlines in our continued efforts to provide excellent customer service.
Transcribe audio tracks and determines timing and placement of captions.
Prepare master and caption scripts and enters this information into the captioning system.
Operate video, audio and word processing equipment and other captioning systems.

SKILL SET

Must demonstrate superior language skills on tests administered by The Media Access Group, including proofreading and typing.
Familiarity with publishing, typesetting, television production, computers, and related fields would be an advantage for the candidate.
Willingness to work overtime during the busiest television season, September through February.
Ability to learn quickly.
Demonstrated experience in writing and editing, including excellent proofreading skills. Broad knowledge of television program material. Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
Excellent problem-solving skills.
Typing Speed 60+wpm.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree required. 1-3 years’ work experience required.
