Job Description
We have an opening for a Materials Chemist to perform a full range of complex research in the area of electrocatalysis. You will actively participate with and be an integral member of a team responsible for integrating advanced characterization with materials design and theory/modeling efforts to support the experimental electrochemistry efforts for multiple emerging energy materials applications. This position is in the Materials for Energy and Climate Security group in the Materials Science Division.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will

Conduct advanced research in catalysis for chemical conversion.
Independently develop complex methods for materials characterization in scalable electrocatalytic and electrochemical systems.
Contribute to and actively participate in the development of high performance electrocatalytic systems and reactors to meet sponsor needs in appropriate national security areas.
Develop and present written analyses, verbal briefings, and other products that capture and communicate research results as well as periodic progress reports.
Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish program goals.
Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level

Design and conduct advanced research programs in integrating theory, modeling, and experiment in electrochemical and electrocatalytic systems.
Develop highly complex and innovative concepts in new materials and promote new ideas; pursue funding both internally and externally to advance the scientific footprint of LLNL.
Serve as a primary technical contact on degradation science and durability in electrocatalytic systems.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Advanced knowledge in nanoscience, materials chemistry and electrocatalysis.
Significant experience with materials synthesis and characterization techniques.
Significant experience collecting, analyzing, and documenting scientific results.
Ability to work independently, as well as a member of a team.
Advanced written and verbal communication skills necessary to deliver presentations and prepare written reports, explain technical information, and provide advice to management.
Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff within a collaborative research and development environment.

Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level

Nationally recognized expertise in electrocatalysis for CO2 conversion or related field.
Established publication record in catalyst design principles.
Expert knowledge in leading project teams and participating in the development of new research programs.

Qualifications We Desire

Expertise with integrating experimental characterization and modeling.
Expertise in developing high throughput materials characterization methods.
